Pores are one of the most searched skincare concerns — and one of the most misunderstood. A significant portion of the products marketed at “minimising” or “tightening” pores are making claims that aren’t possible. Understanding what pores actually are, what determines their appearance, and what skincare can genuinely do about them will save you money and set realistic expectations.
What pores actually are
Pores are the openings of hair follicles on the skin surface. Every follicle has a sebaceous gland attached to it — which is why pores are most visible in areas of high sebum production: the nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead.
Pore size is primarily determined by genetics. The size of the follicle opening you’re born with is largely fixed — and no topical product can permanently change the physical structure of a follicle.
This is the part most skincare marketing glosses over: pores do not open and close. The idea that steam “opens” pores or cold water “closes” them is a myth. What changes is the appearance of pore size — which is genuinely influenced by several factors, and which skincare can meaningfully address.
What actually makes pores look larger
Sebum and congestion. When excess sebum, dead skin cells, and debris accumulate inside the follicle, the follicle wall stretches slightly — making the pore appear larger. This is the most addressable cause of visible pore size.
Loss of skin elasticity. The tissue surrounding pores provides structural support. As collagen and elastin decrease with age and UV exposure, that support weakens — pores appear to sag open. UV damage is the primary accelerant of this process in Australian skin.
Skin texture. Rough, uneven skin surface makes pores more visible because light doesn’t reflect evenly. Smooth, well-hydrated skin diffuses light more uniformly, which makes the same pore appear less prominent.
Dehydration. Dehydrated skin has a slightly rough, uneven surface texture. Well-hydrated skin consistently looks smoother and pores appear less obvious.
What K-beauty can genuinely do
Reduce congestion inside the follicle. Keeping pores clear of sebum build-up is the most direct intervention available. Clay-based cleansers — like the Fully Green Tomato Clay Mask Cleanser in the Barrier Calming Reset bundle — absorb excess sebum and help keep follicles clearer without disrupting the barrier.
Improve surface texture. Ferment-based serums — Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate and Bifida Ferment Lysate — improve skin surface texture and luminosity consistently over four to six weeks. The Numbuzin No.3 Skin Softening Serum (Texture Smoothing Protocol bundle) is built around exactly this mechanism.
Support skin elasticity over time. Consistent barrier care, daily SPF, and ingredients that support collagen synthesis (PDRN, niacinamide) slow the elasticity loss that causes pores to appear more prominent with age.
Maintain hydration. Well-hydrated skin consistently looks smoother and more even, reducing the surface roughness that makes pores more visible.
What K-beauty cannot do
Permanently shrink pores. No topical product can change the physical size of a follicle. Any product claiming to “reduce pore size” is either describing a temporary cosmetic effect or overstating what’s possible.
Eliminate pores. Pores are a normal, functional part of skin. The realistic goal is skin where pores are less congested, the surrounding texture is smoother, and overall skin health means they’re less prominent — not poreless skin.
Reverse significant elasticity loss quickly. Preventive habits (daily SPF, consistent hydration) are far more effective than corrective ones.
The ingredients worth paying attention to
Niacinamide (4–10%) — reduces sebum production, improves skin texture, and supports barrier function. Multiple clinical trials back these effects.
Clay and absorbent ingredients — physically absorb excess sebum inside the follicle. The Tomato Clay Mask Cleanser (Barrier Calming Reset) does this without the drying effect of harsher clay formulas.
Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate — improves overall skin texture and surface smoothness, reducing the visual prominence of pores with consistent use.
Retinoids — the most evidence-backed ingredient for improving skin elasticity and supporting collagen synthesis. Worth considering alongside your K-beauty routine if elasticity loss is your primary concern.
The realistic expectation
With a consistent K-beauty routine over eight to twelve weeks, realistic improvements in pore appearance include: less visible congestion, smoother surrounding skin texture, better hydration, and slower elasticity decline.
None of these involve pores physically shrinking. All of them produce a genuine and visible difference in how pores appear — which is the practical outcome most people are actually looking for.
The Texture Smoothing Protocol is the GSF bundle most directly aligned with these goals — the rice cleanser, ferment serum, and watery cream work together to address sebum balance, surface texture, and hydration in one compatible routine.

The honest summary
Pores can’t be eliminated or permanently shrunk. What can be changed is how prominent they appear — through clearer follicles, smoother surrounding texture, better hydration, and slower elasticity decline. Realistic goal: less prominent pores on healthier skin. That’s achievable. Poreless skin is not.
